Meet our Grafton local Home Loan Specialist – Terry Marsh

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself

I moved to Grafton just over 20 years ago and have also spent some time living in the Lismore area. During my weekends I enjoy fishing and spending time relaxing with my family and friends.

My career in the Financial Services industry started back in 1980 when I started out as a trainee bank teller. Since then I have worked my way through various roles in the industry including being a Personal Lender, Store Supervisor and a Commercial Lender. During my career I spent four years working in the mines, although I eventually returned to banking in 1998 when I became a Home Loan Specialist.

2. What do you specialise in?

I specialise in home lending – both owner occupied and investment. I wrote my very first home loan in 1989, and I still find it to be such a rewarding feeling to tell members their home loan has been approved. I love hearing the excitement and relief in members voices when they find out we can help them achieve their home ownership dreams. It’s a very special experience to be part of!

3. How do you go the extra mile for your customers?

I think it’s really important to get to know the member so I can tailor the products and services to best suit their needs, and I find face-to-face interviews really help where possible. I also think it is important to have an open line of communication with members to keep them informed every step of the way through their home loan experience. I understand the home loan experience doesn’t finish at settlement, so I like to catch up with members about four weeks after to see how they are going - this also gives members a chance to review the overall experience and provide valuable feedback.

I’m based in the Grafton Store, however I’m happy to meet with members anywhere in the Clarence Valley area - whether it be at another bcu store, or anywhere else required.

4. What do you enjoy most about your job?

The best part of my job would have to be helping members to achieve their home loan dreams and goals. I also really enjoy that the home loan experience is always different as all members have different needs and goals. It’s great being able to talk to members and get to know what their goals are so that I can tailor my service to them.

I really enjoy the face-to-face lending experience and being able to provide members with a localised service. I believe that a lot of members in regional arears still appreciate being able to speak to someone in person rather than having to be directed online or to a call centre.

5. What are your biggest achievements in your career?

My biggest achievement would have to be gaining the trust of the staff at the stores that I cover, so that they have no hesitation when they refer a member to me for their home loan.

6. Why do you do what you do; what inspires you to do this work?

I have 35 years of banking experience, so I feel comfortable that I can provide options for members in any situation. There is also a lot of variety in this role, and I enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and helping them achieve their home ownership dreams.
