Card safety tips

To protect against unauthorised use of your PIN and card, it is essential you keep your PIN secure at all times. We strongly recommend the following:

  • Memorise your PIN, then destroy the letter it came on.
  • Do not record your PIN on or with your card
  • Do not disclose your PIN to anyone
  • Do not allow anyone to see your PIN being entered

Please note:
bcu will never contact you and ask you for your PIN and you should not give your PIN to anyone for any reason. If you suspect that your PIN has become known to someone, please call the lost or stolen card number 1800 621 199 (in Australia) or +61 2 9959 7686 (from overseas) immediately.

Verified by Visa provides bcu members with an additional layer of protection when purchasing goods and services online.

When you make a purchase online with a participating merchant your transaction will be assessed to determine if a second level of verification is required. If it is determined that additional verification is necessary you will be required to enter a security code, which can be sent to the mobile number or email address that you have registered with bcu. Once received the code can be entered and the transaction can be finalised.

Verified by Visa helps prevent people using your details without your permission. And it’s good for retailers who want to make sure their customers are protected.

When you complete your payment with Verified by Visa, bcu is able to make additional security checks to ensure your card details have not been compromised. bcu want to make sure that it’s really you making the purchase before they authorise the payment. After all, nobody would expect to take cash out of an ATM without using their PIN. We want to give you the same high standards of protection on the internet as well.

Q: What should I do if my card is lost, or I think my PIN has been compromised?

Q: What is Verified by Visa?

A: Verified by Visa is a service provided by Visa, bcu and 3-D Secure which provides a secure experience for online shoppers. Verified by Visa is an easy to use service that helps increase both cardholder and merchant confidence in internet purchases and reduces disputes and fraudulent activity related to the use of Visa debit and credit cards.


Q: What if I don’t have a mobile number or email address registered with bcu?

A: If you are registered for internet banking and have Security Codes (SMS or token) you are able to make changes to your contact details. This will be updated with our Verified by Visa provider within 15 minutes to allow you to complete the transaction.


If you are not registered for internet banking and/or Security Codes (SMS or token) you are not able to complete transactions that require additional verification without assistance from bcu. Please visit us in-store or call 1300 228 228 during business hours. We apologise for the inconvenience and value your online security.
