As a customer-owned bank we know how much staying connected locally matters, especially when it comes to running your business. It’s why we spend so much time in the community. Relationship Manager Carol Alback discovered her passion for finance and working with small businesses after becoming an accounts clerk for a local builder in Redlands, QLD after high school.
“After almost 8 years both in the office and onsite, I switched into debtor finance for 6 years before finishing my business degree and starting with one of the ‘Big 4’ banks as an Assistant Manager then a Relationship Manager in Business Banking,” Carol said.
“I worked with a huge range of businesses, from aviation to veterinarians, and everything in between.
“After a career break travelling around Australia, I decided I wanted to get back to my roots with a more local bank like BCU.”
She brings 25 years’ banking and finance experience to the BCU Business Banking team servicing the North Coast, NSW community.
Why is it important for business owners to have a positive relationship with their bank?
Carol’s experience working for a bigger bank means she has seen first-hand why customers lose trust in their bank and how hard it is to rebuild it.
“While BCU is smaller with a simpler product set, we don’t offshore our back-office work, so we can be more agile, flexible and responsive to customers,” she said.
“Money matters can feel like a burden on the shoulders of many business owners.
“Being able to work face-to-face with local businesses means we can build stronger relationships and alleviate some of that burden.”
What are the key trends you are seeing for businesses?
Doing things on a truly local level means Carol has a real world understanding of the day-to-day challenges faced by business owners, brokers, property developers, and investors.
“Healthcare and education are massive employers here, which drives a huge hospitality industry that has a hard time affording staffing and the transportation of goods,” Carol said.
“There’s a huge grassroots movement in sustainability here in response to these pressures.
“Businesses are regularly adopting sustainability practices, like trading compostable food scraps with primary producers in return for fresh produce, for longevity.
“Keeping things local is good for the community, good for the planet, and keeps costs down.”
