We’ve recently seen an increase in bank impersonation scams targeting BCU Bank customers.
These scams often involve a phone call from someone claiming to be from BCU Bank or our fraud department. The caller may sound convincing and create a sense of urgency, asking you to confirm details or take action (such as making a transfer) to help protect your money.
If you think you’ve been targeted or may have fallen victim to a scam, please contact us immediately. We’ll act quickly to try to recover your funds, but it’s important to reach out as soon as possible.
How bank impersonation scams work
Scammers may:
- Claim there’s been suspicious activity on your account
- Say there’s been an error that needs to be fixed urgently
- Ask you to confirm personal or banking details
- Ask you to transfer money to secure your account
- Ask you to provide SMS codes required to reset your internet banking password, authorise payments, or register your mobile banking app to a new device
What BCU Bank will never do
To help protect your accounts, please remember that we’ll never do any of the following:
- Ask you for your internet banking password or an SMS security code to reset your internet banking, re-register your mobile banking app, or authorise a payment
- Ask you to transfer money to correct an error or prevent fraud
- Ask you to download or install software so we can access your device
- Ask you to login to internet banking while using screen-sharing or a remote access tool
When BCU Bank may contact you
We may occasionally contact you if your loan or credit card is behind on payments, if unusual activity has been detected as a part of our fraud monitoring process, or if you’ve requested something that requires a follow up.
If we do contact you, we may need to ask some questions to ensure we’re speaking with the right person – however we will never ask for your internet banking password or to transfer money to another bank.
What to do if you receive an unexpected call
If you’re concerned about a phone call you’ve received from someone claiming to be from BCU Bank, please hang up immediately and call our contact centre on 1300 228 228.
Calling us yourself ensures you’re definitely speaking with someone from BCU Bank – not a scammer.
