Frequently asked questions

Home insurance is a type of property insurance that covers insurable events that cause damage to your residence, your furnishings, and your assets. With home insurance, you choose how much to insure your home and/or contents for, and this will be the maximum amount that your insurance may pay out towards the costs of any repair or replacement following an insured event. There are many different types of home insurance with varying features and benefits such as Buildings insurance, Building and Contents insurance, Contents insurance and Landlords insurance.

Building and Contents insurance covers your residential home and offers cover for assets in your property, such as furniture and jewellery. Landlord insurance covers investment properties and can protect against some of the risks that come with renting out your property.

Home insurance can cover your house and other structures within or on your property following insurable events. Some home insurance policies also include liability cover. This means that if there is an incident that causes loss or damage to someone else’s property, or death or bodily injury to other people, your legal liability can be covered.

You can choose to include contents insurance in your policy to help protect other assets and items on or within your home or property, such as electronics, furniture, carpets, curtains, and jewellery.

The price of your Building and Contents insurance is usually based on the likelihood of a claim being made on your policy in the future and can therefore vary. There are several factors we consider when calculating your premium.

We calculate your premium by combining the:

  • Pricing factors
  • Policy options
  • Minimum and maximum premium
  • Government charges
  • Any discounts you’re eligible for

To find out more about how we work out your premium, have a look at the relevant Product Disclosure Statement.

To make a claim with bcu, simply call our partner CGU’s 24/7 claims team on 13 24 80, or visit the CGU Insurance claims page to submit a home insurance claim. Make sure to note down details of the damage and take photos for additional evidence. In the case of theft or vandalism, you must also report this to the police.
