Frequently asked questions

Generally, the four main types of car insurance available in Australia are:

  • Compulsory Third Party (CTP)
  • Comprehensive
  • hird Party Property Damage
  • Third Party Fire and Theft

Each insurance option offers a different level of cover and helps protect your vehicle in a range of situations. For example, Third Party Property Damage insurance covers damage your vehicle causes to other people’s cars and property, while Comprehensive insurance covers damage to your own car, as well as damage to someone else’s.

Different policy options range in both the level of cover provided and price, so it’s important to know the different types available and which protection level is most suitable for you.

Compulsory Third Party insurance (CTP) is compulsory for all cars in Australia.

Comprehensive car insurance is a type of insurance that covers damage to your car, and damage caused to other cars or property should you be involved in an accident. It also covers if your car is stolen, and damage caused by fire, arson, or weather events.

Comprehensive car insurance policies can sometimes provide thehighest level of cover that a provider can offer. However, it’s also important to review the relevant Product Disclosure Statement if you wish to take out a Comprehensive car insurance policy to ensure the product is right for you.

There are three different types of Third Party insurance – Compulsory Third Party, Third Party Property Damage, and Third Party Fire and Theft.

Compulsory Third Party insurance covers bodily injury. Third Party Property Damage insurance covers damage to other people’s vehicles and property, as well as injuries caused to others in the event of a car accident. Third Party Fire and Theft insurance also covers this, as well as loss or damage caused to your vehicle by fire or theft.

The price of your car insurance is usually based on the likelihood of a claim being made on your policy in the future and can therefore vary. There are several factors we consider when calculating your premium.

We calculate your premium by combining the:

  • Pricing factors
  • Policy options
  • minimum and maximum premium
  • Government charges
  • Any discounts you’re eligible for

To find out more about how we work out your premium, have a look at the relevant Product Disclosure Statement.
