We are committed to protecting the personal information about you that we hold.

We at Bananacoast Community Credit Union Ltd (“BCU”) recognise the importance of your privacy, and are committed to protecting the personal information about you that we hold. This Privacy Policy describes how we manage your personal information and safeguard your privacy.

Your relationship with us is that of a member/owner. We believe that in the spirit of co-operation as such member/owner, there is an expectation that you would prefer to purchase financial products and services from us for your benefit and that of all members generally.

The Privacy Act 1988 and the National Privacy Principles

The National Privacy Principles (“NPPs”) set out in the Privacy Act strengthen the protection of your privacy.  We will at all times comply with the NPPs.

Collecting Personal Information About You

We hold only those kinds of personal information that are necessary for us to perform our functions. These may include:

  • Personal details
  • Contact details
  • Financial information
  • Transaction information

We may also collect some information about you when you use our website www.bcu.com.au

If you do not provide us with your personal information, we may not be able to provide you with the services you require.

We will not collect any sensitive information from you.

Using and disclosing your personal information

We respect your privacy. Any personal information which we collect about you will be used by us to:

  • Carry out our business including marketing and promotion
  • Recommend and/or provide you with financial products and services
  • Research into and development of products
  • Assess an application by you for products or services we may provide and if that application is approved, to provide them to you
  • Comply with our legal requirements including the disclosure of information required by any Anti-money Laundering or Counter Terrorism Finance Laws
  • Co-operate in the prevention and investigation of any crime or fraud (suspected or otherwise)

We will only disclose your personal information to external service providers so that they can provide the services we have contracted out to them. Where possible, all our service providers are subject to the NPPs or to contractual arrangements imposing substantially similar obligations.

In addition, we may also use your personal information to provide you with information about any product or service offered or distributed by us or our related companies and/or contractors which we feel may be of interest and of value to you as our member.

We will not sell your personal information to any third party.

Security of your personal information

We will take all reasonable steps to protect your information from misuse, loss, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Such precautions include physical security over our premises, records, computer and network security including firewalls and other identification codes and passwords.

Retention of your personal information

Information is held for as long as is required by law after which it is destroyed by means of a secure destruction service.

Computer and network security

You can help us protect your privacy by complying with any of our security requirements relating to the use of IBank, PINs and passwords.

Access to your personal information

In most cases, you can gain access to personal information we hold about you. We will handle requests for access to your personal information in accordance with the NPPs. All requests for access to your personal information will be handled by our Privacy Access Officer who can be contacted by telephone or in writing at the telephone number and post and email addresses set out below.

We will deal with all requests for access to personal information as quickly as possible. In any event, we will make an initial response to your request within 30 days. Requests for large amounts of information, or for information not currently in use, may require some time before a full response can be given.

In some circumstances, we may refuse to give you access to personal information we hold about you, for example, where to do so would be unlawful or we consider the request is frivolous or vexatious.

If we refuse to give you access to the personal information you request, we will provide you with reasons for our refusal.

Keeping your information up to date

We wish to ensure that your personal information is accurate, complete and up to date. Generally, if you request us to do so, we will amend any personal information about you that is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.

There will be no charge for lodging a request for access to personal information. However, we may charge you for providing access. Any charges will not be excessive.

Changes to our privacy policy

From time to time, it may be necessary for us to review and revise our privacy policy. We reserve the right to change our privacy policy at any time. If we do change this policy we will post amended versions in all our branches and post an updated version on our website.
