Why aren’t people more proactive in safeguarding vital information such as their personal identity or financial details?
One in five people could be at risk ‘We know the cyber risks are out there and they’re real, yet scepticism and inertia can be deep-seated and difficult to change. If BCU members are representative of the wider community, then one in five Australians using the internet are at serious risk of fraud and identity theft. That’s a frightening thought.’ Free internet security software proves popular with BCU members Rapid uptake Can you afford not to use TrustDefender? The statistics How to download What the experts have to say! Tips for safe electronic banking Technical Support Free internet security software proves popular with BCU members Since early July, BCU members have been able to download and install award-winning Australian internet security software, TrustDefender – free of charge! This ‘Australian first’ means that BCU is providing its members with a level of online transaction protection not currently offered by any other bank or financial institution in Australia. Members can now transact online with peace of mind and those who have not used internet banking before can now start to enjoy the convenience of 24 hour banking. According to Gillian French, BCU’s General Manager, Marketing, the decision to provide TrustDefender to members was driven by the need to reduce members’ exposure to the growing threat of internet fraud and to encourage more members to use iBank. It also forms part of BCU’s larger security strategy that’s been rolled out over the past few months, which includes the introduction of one-time security tokens.
Rapid uptake After three months since the launch of TrustDefender, around 3,200 registered BCU iBank users downloaded the software. Analysis by TrustDefender reveals that BCU members have quickly realised the security risks posed by poorly protected home computers and done something about it. - The number of ‘safe and secure’ computers increased from 66% to 79%, indicating that members were dealing with the security issues identified by TrustDefender’s security health checks.
- The number of enabled anti-virus engines rose from 81% to 92%.
- The number of different firewall products jumped from 9 to 42.
Can you afford not to use TrustDefender? The statistics
Several alarming statistics were also collected in those first weeks: - 9% of BCU members who installed TrustDefender had known malware or disallowed software.
- 12% had unknown or potentially dangerous software.
- 8% of users didn’t have an anti-virus engine or the engine was switched off.
- Of the enabled anti-virus engines, only 79% were up-to-date. One in five users were, therefore, at risk of having their computer infected by malware.
- 8% of firewalls were disabled.

What the experts have to say! As the owner of a computer store, I’m constantly telling my clients about spyware or adware and the need for security software such as anti-virus protection. Over the past few years, I’ve seen several local instances where people have had funds stolen from their bank accounts. The problem is ever-present because of the ongoing nature of virus propagation. What is so impressive about TrustDefender is that it applies specific security policies and rules, set by the financial institution, prior to login, thereby ensuring that any online transactions won’t fall prey to an online fraudster or identity thieves. It gives the consumer peace of mind that their confidential information is secure before and during the period of their transaction. Following the launch in Coffs Harbour recently, my technicians tested TrustDefender alongside the other security systems we use and recommend and I’m happy to report that with initial testing TrustDefender successfully adds another layer of protection for the user and their on-line transactions.
